10 Things MTV's Catfish Taught Me
Everything from Internet Smarts to Dating Advice. MTV's Catfish is easily one of my favorite shows. Not because I wholeheartedly believe everything presented on screen is 100% real, but because it's interesting to learn the kind of situations that people can get themselves into when trying to date online. It's pretty funny sometimes as well. And the bromance of Nev and Max is everyone's favourite thing to watch.
For those of you that haven't seen it, Catfish follows hosts Nev and Max as they try to unite two people that have been speaking to each other online but have never met. Often there is a catch: the person never wants to video chat, their pictures are of someone else, etc. More often than not, one of the two people ends up not being who they said they were and it stirs up a lot of mixed emotions and anger. In essence, be you online. Not someone else.
I have heard plenty of online dating/relationship horror stories and have watched enough Catfish episodes to say that online dating isn't for me. But there seems to be a widely growing interest in dating and getting yourself out there on the world wide web, so if you're careful and seek out the right people, you could end up successfully finding someone on the internet. Just don't forget the many lessons that have been presented on Catfish when you're out there looking for your special someone. In fact, whether you're dating online or just putting yourself out there in real life, these bits of wisdom can be equally as valuable.

1. Love yourself first
On the show, more often than not a person that is trying to be someone else suffers from low self-esteem, depression, and more. So remember to love yourself before trying to love another person. Love yourself first and everything will fall into place.
2. You cannot trust every person
Nev and Max have revealed a countless amount of people that claim to be one person and end up being another. Just keep a sharp eye when you're talking to or involved with anyone, it doesn't hurt.
3. People are not always who they say they are
Even if the girl you're talking to is really cool and nice. Make sure you know her. Make sure you talk to her a lot and understand where she's coming from. Missing out on any detail could be a bigger deal than you think.
4. If something feels like it's off, it probably is
This can apply to anything. Getting that feeling that something is wrong makes a person either want to act on it or suppress it. Just act on it. You won't regret finding out the truth in the long run.
5. You will most likely never find an attractive rapper that has a lot of money and seeks out random internet women/men to fall in love with
This is Catfish specific. But seriously. Don't get tricked by super off-the-wall circumstances online. Ever.
6. Always take a look at the whole picture
In every situation, it is important to pay attention to every detail. Not just the details that you want to focus on. See the entire picture before making a decision on a person, especially. After all, you aren't going to date a part of a person, you're dating the whole guy/girl.
7. It is okay to be upset when you've been wronged...
People screw up sometimes and it can hurt a person's feelings. And that's okay. On the show, people can get pretty upset when they thought they knew the person they were talking to. And that's perfectly okay. Just don't get violent.
8. ...But don't forget to get back up
Again, people make mistakes. But that's not your fault, and you always have the opportunity to come out of a situation the bigger person. You might even get a helping hand from a friend.
9. Be you
Don't feel like you need to cover up with what you think people want to see. People will love the real you if you show it to them.
10. You do not have to settle for someone. Ever.
Even if the person you're talking to is super nice and handsome and says all the right things - if you don't feel 100% about him/her, you don't have to be with them. And you sure as heck don't have to feel bad about it.
One thing i take from Catfish is, do all your research, search pictures etc. Basically its just common sense to know whether something doesn't add up or when they aren't being entirely honest. Nev and Max give it point blank, particularly Max - It still surprises me to this day as to why people are still being Catfished, in this modern day in age.
I'm not gonna lie, Catfish makes me weary of online dating mainly because you just never know who you are talking to whether it could be someone in another city, country or another street 10 blocks from you, they could be using someone elses picture. But ultimately everyone wants companionship and love. And online friendships are beautiful thing to have, i have a lovely set of online friends in the bloggersphere and even in fandoms.
What lesson's have you gotten from Catfish or from another tv series?
